Now For Something Truly Exotic

“India has so many aspects, “ says Marion Miller, director of operations, for Micato Safaris, “It is magical. An ancient country with a fascinating history, full of legends and romance. An exotic land of maharajas and their palaces, holy men and their temples. It is a place of deep spiritual tradition that gave rise to two of the world’s great religions. The people are gracious; the food is delicious; and the shopping is fabulous!"

Marion also points out the contrasts visitors will find there: “On one street you can see someone riding a camel, an elephant carrying a load of goods, three or more people on a moped, a shining Mercedes, a modern Volvo bus, and an elephant bearing an advertisement on its side being led by its handler.” Not your typical traffic scene!

India provides the most amazing, indelible and memorable incentive travel experience possible, Marion says, citing its colors, sounds, and scents. The passing parade includes camels, cows, and rickshaws…beautiful women harvesting wheat in their brilliantly-colored saris …children smiling and waving as you drive through their village. A day’s events may include a rain of flower petals, performing snake charmers, and festive fireworks.

Home to Hindus, Buddhists, Moslems, Sikhs, Sufis, Sadhus, this is a land where much is to be learned of the history of religion and of acceptance.

For those who visit India with Micato, it is first-class all the way, staying in 5 star deluxe hotels, often with special views of the country’s wonders. The pampering is to be expected from the company that has been named the World’s Best Tour Operator and Safari Outfitter for the last four years in a row by readers of Travel & Leisure magazine.

The 9-day Mysteries of India program takes visitors to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Udaipur covering many of the country’s fabled sites while also allowing time for shopping and enjoying the ample amenities in the splendid hotels.

Highlights of a journey of highlights include:

In Delhi

The Red Fort in Old Delhi, a symbol of Shah Jehan’s Mughal power and elegance. Within the red sandstone walls is the hall where once stood the world famous Peacock Throne with its ceiling of solid silver.

Cycle Rickshaw Ride through the narrow, bustling alleyways of Chandni Chowk, once the Mughal era’s commercial center and now an area of colorful bazaars.

Humayun’s Tomb, built by a wife for her husband, the design served 100 years later as the basis for the Taj Mahal, built by a husband for his wife.

In Agra

Sunrise and sunset visits to the Taj Mahal, Shah Jehan’s enduring monument to love. Made of pure white marble, the architectural marvel changes colors as the sunset plays off its surface. A professional photographer captures the moment for each guest individually.

A traditional Indian Thali dinner where women receive a bracelet fashioned of jasmine flowers and men receive a rose before the evening begins.

In Jaipur

A Maharaja’s Welcome to Jaipur, known as the Pink City because of the shimmering pink sandstone everywhere. Arrive in a Royal Carriage or on elephant back escorted by camels and elephants who raise their trunks in a salute as fragrant rose petals are showered on the arriving guests. Mounted lancers lead the processions and musicians herald their entry.

Turban tying ceremony. Unwound, a turban is an impressively long piece of cloth. The mysteries of its formation can be revealed in a special session for guests.

An Indian Odyssey: Dinner at the City Palace. Guests are presented with a collection of Indian outfits to wear. Brilliantly colored saris for the ladies and kurta pajamas for the gentlemen. The evening ends with music and fireworks.

In Udaipur

Royal Gangaur Cruise. Glide quietly over the waters of Lake Pichola in an antique royal barge belonging to the House of Mewar. The Gangaur was used in the James Bond film Octopussy. Cocktails and a barbecue dinner can be served on board lit only by candles while a sitar player provides soft background music.

Shopping

Indian fabrics are world renown and make lovely souvenirs and gifts: silks and cottons, embroidered shawls and saris and slippers The country is also known for its fine leather goods, jewelry, carpets, marble, ceramics, miniature paintings silver, blue pottery, emeralds, cushion covers, sandalwood, and other treasures. Prices are negotiable and bargaining is expected.

When and How to Visit

On your next trip…

Rajasthan is also home to the Ranthambore tiger reserve, and the most luxurious tented camp you can imagine. That’s another story and another adventure to inquire about.
